Botswana

Researched· 2026-06-07

I have not opened a Botswana broker account. Based on BSE materials, broker websites, and listing data. Confirm broker specifics directly.

Short answer

Botswana is one of the easier African frontier markets for a foreign individual. The Botswana Stock Exchange (BSE) is small but well-run, the pula is stable (managed against a rand/SDR basket), and there are no special barriers to foreign portfolio investors. You invest through a BSE-member stockbroker; the lightest-touch route is mystocks.africa, which now covers the BSE. The local listed pool is dominated by banks and retail, while the country’s headline thesis — diamonds — is mostly held privately (Debswana, the De Beers/government JV, isn’t listed). The cleanest offshore proxy is Lucara Diamond, whose Karowe mine is in Botswana.

Best practical route

  • Lightest touch: mystocks.africa — covers the BSE through one digital onboarding (aggregator counterparty-risk caveat applies; see its page).
  • Direct local account: a BSE-member broker — Imara Capital Securities (the dominant broker, with offshore-market partnerships), Motswedi Securities, or Stockbrokers Botswana.
  • Just want the diamond thesis: Lucara Diamond (LUC) on the TSX, no Botswana account needed.

What you can actually buy

BSE-listed equities — the main names are financials and consumer:

  • First National Bank Botswana (FNBB), Absa Bank Botswana, Standard Chartered Botswana, BBS Bank
  • Letshego Holdings — pan-African microfinance group, Botswana-headquartered
  • Sefalana Holdings — retail/distribution conglomerate
  • Choppies Enterprises — supermarket chain
  • Botswana Telecommunications (BTCL), Sechaba (brewing), plus property and resource counters

Botswana’s diamond wealth largely sits in Debswana (De Beers + government JV), which is not listed — so direct diamond exposure on the BSE is limited.

Tax, documentation & residency friction

  • Broker account — standard KYC (passport, proof of address, source of funds) with a BSE-member broker; no residence requirement for foreign portfolio investors.
  • Currency — the pula is comparatively stable (managed basket), which makes Botswana less FX-volatile than most African frontier markets.
  • Taxes — Botswana applies withholding tax on dividends; confirm the current rate and any capital-gains treatment with your broker.

Offshore-listed alternatives

Choppies EnterprisesCHPJSEBotswana supermarket group, dual-listed BSE + Johannesburg; Botswana is its core market
Lucara DiamondLUCTSXKarowe mine in Botswana is its flagship asset; also Nasdaq Stockholm & BSE
Tlou EnergyTOUASXBotswana coal-bed-methane gas-to-power developer (Lesedi); also LSE & BSE

Choppies is the cleanest operating proxy (a Botswana retailer you can buy on the JSE); the mining/energy names carry project and single-commodity risk on top of country risk. The listed banks and Letshego are only reachable through the BSE route (or mystocks.africa).

Verdict

Botswana is a stable, well-governed small market that’s genuinely open to foreigners — mystocks.africa makes entry easy, and Imara is the obvious direct broker. The limitation is what’s on the exchange: solid banks and consumer names, but the diamond engine of the economy is largely private. For diamond exposure, Lucara (Karowe) is the cleaner route.
