I have not opened a Chilean broker account. Content based on SII (Servicio de Impuestos Internos) foreign investor guidance, Chilean broker (corredora de bolsa) websites, CMF broker registry, and ADR/ETF market data.
Short answer
Foreign non-residents can access Chile’s market, but the easy path is ADRs/ETF or a relationship-style Chilean broker — not a mass-market app. No Chilean equivalent of IBKR direct exchange access exists for retail. You need a Chilean RUT (Rol Único Tributario), but the SII recognises a simplified RUT process via brokers, banks, or custodians — so a physical visit is not inherently required. Renta 4 Chile explicitly requires Chilean national ID with permanent/definitive residency; non-resident foreigners are excluded. Confirm residency requirements explicitly with any broker before pursuing.
Best practical route
| Route | Practicality | Visit needed |
|---|---|---|
| Established Chilean bank/private-client broker | Best for direct Bolsa de Santiago stocks | Usually no, if broker handles simplified RUT |
| Chilean ADRs in US | Easiest for major Chilean names | No |
| iShares MSCI Chile ETF (ECH) | Easiest broad exposure | No |
| Schwab Global Investing Services desk | Possible by phone, ticker-by-ticker | No, but requires existing Schwab relationship |
| IBKR direct Santiago Stock Exchange | Not a reliable route for retail accounts | N/A — confirm ticker availability before assuming |
For most investors: ECH + selected ADRs is operationally simpler than any direct route. Direct Bolsa de Santiago access makes sense only when you want mid-cap or specialty names not available as ADRs.
Direct local broker process:
- Pick a corredora de bolsa willing to onboard non-residents
- Provide passport, tax residency/FATCA-CRS forms, address proof, source-of-funds documents (possibly notarised/apostilled)
- Obtain Chilean RUT via the broker/custodian under SII’s simplified process, or via a local representative with power of attorney
- Fund through formal banking/FX channels — larger foreign-capital flows may trigger Central Bank reporting under the foreign-exchange compendium
- Shares held/settled through the DCV (Depósito Central de Valores) central securities depository
Broker options
Best starting points for non-residents:
| Broker | Notes |
|---|---|
| Banchile Inversiones | Banco de Chile-affiliated; broad market access |
| BCI Corredor de Bolsa | Banco Crédito e Inversiones-affiliated |
| BTG Pactual Chile | Strong regional/institutional; private-client capability |
| BICE Inversiones | BICE bank-affiliated; private-client orientation |
| Credicorp Capital Chile | Large regional broker; institutional/private-client |
| LarrainVial | Major broker and asset manager; strong for larger accounts |
| Santander Corredores de Bolsa | International bank parent may smooth onboarding |
| Scotia Corredora de Bolsa Chile | International bank parent (Scotiabank) |
| Itaú BBA Chile | Bank-linked; regional reach |
| Valores Security | Established local brokerage |
| Consorcio Corredores de Bolsa | Insurance-group affiliated |
| MBI Corredores de Bolsa | Independent broker |
| Vector Capital | Smaller independent broker |
The Scalex (Bolsa de Santiago’s investment platform) corredores page lists associated brokers including BanChile, BancoEstado, BCI, BTG, BICE, BofA Security, and Credicorp Capital. The CMF (Chilean financial regulator) maintains the official registry.
Ask explicitly: “Can you onboard a non-resident foreign individual under the simplified RUT process, and can the account be opened remotely?”
Schwab Global Investing Services desk can handle foreign securities by phone, but Chile is not one of the standard online Schwab Global Account markets. Call security-by-security. Relevant only for existing Schwab clients with meaningful relationships.
Warnings
Renta 4 Chile is not viable for non-resident foreigners. Their FAQ confirms foreigners need Chilean ID with permanent/definitive residency plus passport — this excludes non-residents without Chilean residency. Other retail/app-only Chilean brokers may have similar restrictions; verify explicitly before pursuing.
Do not assume IBKR provides direct Bolsa de Santiago access for retail accounts. IBKR added direct B3 (Brazil) access in December 2025; Chile has had no comparable upgrade. IBKR is useful for Chilean ADRs and ECH (standard US-listed instruments), not Chilean local shares.

Verdict
Chile sits between Argentina (more restrictions) and Brazil (better foreign-broker options) in the directory’s LatAm coverage — similar to Colombia in practical terms. The simplified RUT process via brokers makes remote onboarding workable; there is no binding “find a local resident” requirement as in Argentina.
The Chilean equity market offers genuine structural interest: lithium exposure through SQM (one of the world’s largest producers), copper-linked companies (though Codelco is state-owned and unlisted), consumer staples (CCU, Andina), and a relatively stable currency by LatAm standards.
If you have a specific Chile thesis — lithium, pension reform, demographic stability — direct local access via Banchile, BCI, or BTG Pactual Chile is worth the manual onboarding. For diversified LatAm/EM portfolio building, ECH + selected ADRs is sufficient and operationally much simpler.
