What it is

DEGIRO is a low-cost European brokerage within flatexDEGIRO Bank — best understood as a broad, cheap, online European broker, not a frontier specialist. For European (incl. Swedish) residents it pairs a low fee structure with a usefully wide exchange list: LSE/AIM, much of continental Europe, the US/Canada, and — the directory-relevant part — Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and Australia.

Onboarding / eligibility

DEGIRO accepts applicants who are 18+, have a valid ID, hold a SEPA-zone bank account in their own name, and are exclusively tax-resident in an accepted country (most of the EU/EEA, plus a few others). Onboarding is app-based with an ID scan. It does not accept US persons. This is a residence-based product, not a citizenship one.

Markets

DEGIRO covers 24 markets (per its own list, shown below):

For this directory the relevant lines are AIM, Greece, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore — they let a European resident reach the foreign-listed lines of many EM/frontier operators (an AIM-listed African or South-Asian developer, an HK/SGX-listed proxy) without a phone order or a local account. Note there is no Turkey, and DEGIRO does not reach the local African or South-Asian frontier exchanges, nor the JSE.

Caveat — main boards, not the minor venues. Within a covered country, DEGIRO typically reaches only the primary exchange, not the smaller secondary lists or junior/SME segments. So a name that trades only on a minor venue may not be executable even though DEGIRO “covers” that country. This is where IBKR’s deeper, more complete per-market coverage wins — if a specific small-cap line matters, check it in the app first, and keep IBKR (or Trading 212 for AIM) as the fallback.

Best / poor use cases

Use DEGIRO when: you’re an EU/EEA resident wanting a cheap online broker; you want LSE/AIM without a phone order; or you want Greece/Hong Kong/Japan/Singapore/Australia access through a European broker as a secondary to Avanza/Nordnet/IBKR.

Skip it when: you’re a US person; you want Turkey or deep frontier local exchanges; or you need IBKR-style multi-currency/options/futures/institutional breadth.

Verdict

A useful secondary broker: low-cost, broad for a European platform, and the cheapest convenient route to AIM, Greece and developed-Asia lines for EU/EEA residents. Not a frontier solution on its own — and not a Turkey route — so pair it with IBKR, mystocks.africa, or local brokers where it can’t reach.
