Who can open an account
Open to international clients in most countries — not gated to a single country of residence — through one Hong Kong onboarding that covers all 18 markets. It's broker-mediated rather than app self-service (passport, proof of address, source of funds), with settlement in six currencies. US persons: see below.

Markets covered

18 markets through one account (per the in-app list): Hong Kong, US, Japan, Australia, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Mainland China (Shanghai/Shenzhen-HK Connect + Shanghai/Shenzhen B-shares), Thailand, Taiwan, UK, France, Germany, Switzerland, Portugal and Canada.

Recommendation
Broad, historically hard-to-reach Asian access — but dated, pricier than IBKR (and charges dividend fees); where IBKR also offers the market, pick IBKR

Verified — I’ve held a Boom account since 2007. Coverage based on long-term personal use plus Boom’s published market list and broker materials.

What it is

Hong Kong-based brokerage founded 1997 (formerly Monex Boom Securities), acquired by Ignition Holdings in June 2024. The structural differentiator is 18 global markets through a single onboarding — broader Asian coverage than the modern fintech brokers (Tiger, Futu/moomoo) that focus on 4–5 markets. Core coverage includes Hong Kong, Mainland China A-shares (Stock Connect framework), Japan, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan, United States, and Australia — plus the harder-to-reach Southeast Asian markets: Indonesia (IDX), Philippines (PSE), Malaysia (Bursa Malaysia), and Thailand (SET). That last group is where Boom earns its place; most international brokers don’t cover Indonesia or Philippines from outside the country.

My status with this broker

Verified — I’ve held a Boom account since 2007, so this is nearly two decades of first-hand experience. It’s widely regarded as one of the best Asian retail brokers for international investors, thanks to broad market access through a single Hong Kong account, and that matches my own long-term use.

Account-opening friction

Account opening is broker-mediated rather than fully self-service — closer to a traditional brokerage relationship than the Tiger/Futu app-only model. Standard documentation applies: passport, proof of address, source of funds. Settlement is available in 6 currencies (HKD, SGD, USD, JPY among them), allowing you to hold balances across currencies without forcing constant FX conversions for each Asian market traded.

Platform UX is older than the modern fintech brokers. Tiger and Futu built their interfaces in the smartphone era; Boom’s predates that wave and feels more traditional. Worth confirming the exact current 18-market list directly with Boom at the time of onboarding, as coverage details can change after acquisition.

Known caveats

Verdict

Boom long provided access to markets that were genuinely hard to reach otherwise — South Korea, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand and mainland China — through a single Hong Kong account. It’s a web-1.0-era broker that has largely stayed there (a good web-1.0 interface, to be fair); deposits once required faxes, and there’s still a bit of friction on deposits and withdrawals. Fees aren’t exorbitant but they’re higher than IBKR, and it annoyingly charges fees on dividends. Its edge has narrowed now that IBKR and others have expanded their Asian coverage. I’ve been a happy Boom user for years — but where IBKR and Boom offer the same market, I now choose IBKR.
