Short answer: it depends on whether you want the one big name or the broader market. Cyprus is a small EU exchange (the Cyprus Stock Exchange, CSE) in euros, with no limits on foreign ownership — but most international brokers don’t carry it. The shortcut: Bank of Cyprus Holdings — the island’s largest bank and its marquee stock — delisted from London in September 2024 and now trades on the Athens Exchange (ATHEX: BOCHGR), so any Athens-capable broker reaches it with no Cypriot account. For the broader CSE, EXANTE lists the exchange directly (€10,000 minimum). There’s no single-country Cyprus ETF.
Best route
- Just want the marquee name? Buy Bank of Cyprus on Athens (ATHEX: BOCHGR) through any broker that covers the Athens exchange — done, no Cypriot account.
- Want the broader CSE? EXANTE lists the Cyprus Stock Exchange directly — the cleanest international route to local CSE names.
Can you use IBKR?
For Bank of Cyprus, yes — IBKR (and any Athens-capable broker) reaches its Athens listing. For the rest of the CSE, no — IBKR doesn’t carry the Cyprus exchange; EXANTE does. Because the CSE and Athens share one trading platform (the CSE–ATHEX Common Platform), an Athens member or a local Cypriot broker can also route CSE orders.
Local broker route
CySEC-regulated Cypriot brokers give full CSE access — CISCO (Bank of Cyprus’s brokerage), Sharelink Securities, Atlantic Securities, Argus Stockbrokers, Mega Equity Securities — natural for residents or larger accounts. Cyprus is in the EU and eurozone, so there’s no currency or capital-control friction; the practical questions are non-resident onboarding and whether a local bank account is required — confirm with the broker.
Listed-abroad alternatives
- Bank of Cyprus Holdings (ATHEX: BOCHGR) — Cyprus’s largest bank; the cleanest way to own a Cyprus name from abroad (also CSE: BOCH).
- No single-country Cyprus ETF, and few Cyprus-economy companies list elsewhere (many Cyprus-incorporated names are foreign-operating holdings, not a play on Cyprus itself).
What can go wrong
The CSE is small (~100 listings) and thinly traded beyond the banks; liquidity, not access, is the constraint. And don’t confuse Cyprus-incorporated holding companies abroad with exposure to the Cypriot economy.
Next step
The Cyprus country page has the broker routes, the CSE–ATHEX common-platform detail, and the main local names.
