Short answer: use an international broker, not a Thai one. Thailand is that rare frontier-adjacent market where the local account is the worse route: Boom Securities (Hong Kong) carries the SET on its verified 18-market list — standard HK onboarding, no Thailand visit — and Phillip/POEMS Singapore covers it too (not for US persons). IBKR does not reliably provide SET retail access. Americans use Schwab’s phone desk. For plain beta, THD trades on NYSE.
The routes, ranked
- Boom Securities (HK) — the verified primary route: Thailand on BOOM’s official market list, one HK onboarding covers all 18 markets, no Thai paperwork at all.
- Phillip/POEMS Singapore — covers the SET for those who already hold or want a Singapore account; not open to American clients.
- Schwab Global Investing Services desk (US residents) — Thailand is on the buy-and-sell list, broker-assisted by phone. The practical American route, since Boom and Phillip won’t take US persons.
- Local Thai brokers — accept foreigners in principle (Kasikorn, Bualuang publish foreign-client documentation) but assume Thai banking infrastructure; more relevant for foreigners living in Thailand than investing from abroad.
Without any Asian account
THD (iShares MSCI Thailand ETF) on NYSE through any standard broker — diversified SET exposure, none of the setup.
