Zambia

Researched· 2026-07-03

I have not opened a Zambian broker account. Based on LuSE materials, broker websites, and listing data. Confirm broker specifics directly.

Short answer

Zambia is accessible to foreign individuals through a Lusaka Securities Exchange (LuSE) member broker, or — more simply — via mystocks.africa, which now covers the LuSE. The local market is small and dominated by banks, brewers, and retailers; the country’s defining thesis is copper, and that’s held offshore far more liquidly than on the LuSE. The cleanest copper-via-Zambia proxy is First Quantum Minerals, whose Kansanshi and Sentinel mines now account for the large majority of its output.

Best practical route

  • Lightest touch: mystocks.africa — covers the LuSE through one onboarding (aggregator counterparty-risk caveat applies).
  • Direct local account: a LuSE-member broker — Pangaea Securities (the leading broker by turnover), Stockbrokers Zambia, or SBZ / Stanbic.
  • Just want the copper thesis: First Quantum Minerals (FM) on the TSX for a liquid copper pure-play, or ZCCM Investments Holdings (MLZAM, Euronext Access Paris) for a thin, discounted proxy on Zambia’s state mining-investment portfolio — neither needs a Zambian account.

What you can actually buy

LuSE-listed equities — mainly financials and consumer:

  • Zanaco, Standard Chartered Zambia, Absa Bank Zambia — banks
  • Zambian Breweries, Zambeef — consumer/agri
  • Airtel Networks Zambia, Lafarge Zambia, Shoprite (cross-listed), CEC (Copperbelt Energy)
  • ZCCM Investments Holdings (ZCCM-IH) — the state mining-investment vehicle, holding minority stakes in major Zambian mines (the closest thing to a listed copper play on the LuSE)

The big copper mines themselves are owned by foreign majors and privates (First Quantum, Barrick’s Lumwana, Vedanta’s Konkola), not directly listed in Lusaka.

Tax, documentation & residency friction

  • Broker account — standard KYC with a LuSE-member broker; no residence requirement for foreign portfolio investors. Funding/repatriation runs through a Zambian bank.
  • Currency — the kwacha (ZMW) has been volatile and tied to the copper cycle; factor real FX risk into returns.
  • Taxes — Zambia withholds tax on dividends; confirm the current rate and capital-gains treatment with your broker.

Offshore-listed alternatives

Zambeef ProductsZAMLSE (AIM)Zambia-based integrated agribusiness/food group; dual-listed LuSE + London AIM — a clean Zambia operating proxy

ZCCM Investments HoldingsMLZAMEuronext Access ParisZambia’s state mining-investment holding co (ISIN ZM0000000037); the foreign-accessible line — thin, at a wide discount to its Lusaka listing. London-listing revival flagged June 2026

Zambeef is the cleanest pure-Zambia operating name reachable abroad. Barrick (Lumwana) and Vedanta also mine Zambian copper, but Zambia is a small part of Barrick and Konkola is effectively private — so First Quantum is the one liquid copper name where Zambia genuinely drives the result. ZCCM-IH (the state mining-investment vehicle, holding minority stakes across major Zambian mines) is the offshore-accessible way to hold a basket of Zambian mining exposure: its primary listing is the LuSE, but the Euronext Access Paris line (MLZAM, ISIN ZM0000000037) lets a foreigner buy it through any normal broker — no Lusaka account needed.

Two caveats worth stating. First, that Paris line is thin and historically trades at a wide discount to the Lusaka shares — partly liquidity, partly kwacha volatility — so the “same” company can cost very different amounts depending on venue. Second, ZCCM is having a moment: on 26 June 2026 the Financial Times reported the company is reviving its London listing and wants to grow its market cap from ~$1.4bn toward ~$7bn over a decade, and Mining Weekly (19 June 2026) noted a possible buy-back to close the European discount and the planned US IPO of Vedanta’s CopperTech Metals (Konkola), in which ZCCM holds a stake. Interesting, but a complex, opaque holding company with litigation/arbitration overhangs — a research project, not a clean thesis. (Thanks to the reader who flagged the June 2026 developments.)

Verdict

Zambia is straightforward to access (mystocks.africa or Pangaea), but the LuSE itself is a small banks-and-consumer market. The reason to care about Zambia is copper, and the most direct, liquid way to own that is First Quantum on the TSX — now effectively a Zambia-copper pure-play after Panama’s shutdown. For local-market diversification, ZCCM-IH is the interesting LuSE name. Researched, not yet opened.
