Bangladesh

I have not opened a Bangladeshi broker account. Content based on CDBL account opening documentation, broker websites (BRAC EPL, City Brokerage, Dragon Securities, BMSL), and NITA-related materials from Commercial Bank of Ceylon Bangladesh and other authorized dealer banks.

Short answer

Accessible but not simple. A foreign non-resident needs three coordinated accounts: a NITA (Non-Resident Investor’s Taka Account) at an authorized dealer bank, a BO account (Beneficial Owner) with CDBL for custody, and a broker trading account for order execution. An in-person visit is not legally required — Dragon Securities explicitly accepts documents attested by a Bangladesh embassy or notarized in the investor’s country — but the custodian bank is often the friction point that may request originals or video KYC. No offshore-listed Bangladesh ETF provides direct equivalent exposure.

Best practical route

  1. Contact Commercial Bank of Ceylon Bangladesh first about NITA setup — they publish unusually clear public documentation and list a USD 100 minimum opening balance.
  2. Once NITA is confirmed, contact BRAC EPL Stock Brokerage to coordinate BO and trading account opening.
  3. Alternative brokers: City Brokerage (explicitly accepts foreign nationals residing abroad), Dragon Securities (explicitly addresses embassy-attestation/notarization), BMSL Investment (explicit foreign-investor account page), LankaBangla Securities (large market presence).

The custodian bank choice matters more than the broker choice — it controls funding flows and repatriation.

What you can actually buy

Dhaka Stock Exchange (DSE): Square Pharmaceuticals, Grameenphone (telecoms), BRAC Bank, Beximco Pharmaceuticals, Renata, BAT Bangladesh, ACI Limited, City Bank, Lafarge Holcim Bangladesh, Olympic Industries, plus banks, insurance, manufacturing, and telecoms.

Chittagong Stock Exchange (CSE): Secondary exchange; smaller listing universe, generally less liquid than DSE.

Bangladeshi government securities: Accessible through some custodian banks for foreign investors under a separate regulatory framework from equity NITA.

Tax, documentation & residency friction

Three-account architecture — required in sequence:

  1. Open NITA with an authorized dealer/custodian bank.
  2. Open BO account with CDBL through the custodian or broker. The CDBL online BO portal is oriented around Bangladesh NID and NRB workflows; non-resident foreigners typically go through custodian-assisted opening rather than self-service.
  3. Open broker trading account (DSE/CSE-licensed broker).
  4. Send foreign currency through banking channels into the NITA; custodian bank converts USD/EUR/etc. to BDT.
  5. Broker executes trades; securities settle into BO account.
  6. Repatriate dividends, sale proceeds, and capital through the NITA route.

Visit: No legal requirement, but the custodian bank may require certified originals, video KYC, or branch-representative handling. Broker side generally accepts courier, email, or scans plus attested documents.

Costs (ask each provider for line items): custody fee, NITA fee, BO fee (CDBL via custodian), brokerage commission, FX spread on currency conversion, repatriation fees. No regulatory minimum investment identified beyond Commercial Bank of Ceylon’s USD 100 account opening balance — usefully small.

Offshore-listed alternatives

No exchange-listed product (ETF, ADR, GDR) providing straightforward foreign-individual access to Bangladeshi equities identified. Direct DSE/CSE access via the three-account route is the only viable path.

Verdict

Bangladesh is more accessible than Pakistan or India for foreign individuals — several brokers actively publish foreign-investor onboarding docs and the process is largely solvable remotely. The three-account architecture (NITA + BO + broker) creates more coordination overhead than single-broker frontier markets like Vietnam or Uzbekistan, but each piece is documented. The DSE has gone through periods of political-instability-driven volatility; 2024–2026 has been a particularly difficult period domestically. For value-oriented frontier investors with patience, Bangladesh may be a useful diversifier within a broader FM portfolio. The custodian bank relationship is the rate-limiting step — once it’s set up, broker and BO follow more easily.
