Sweden (Stockholm)
Who can open an account
Swedish-resident infrastructure: onboarding runs on a Swedish personnummer, BankID and a Swedish bank account, so in practice it's for residents of Sweden — a Swedish citizen abroad can't simply use it, and it isn't a route for non-Swedish-resident foreigners.
US persons
Not applicable — Swedish residents only (BankID required)
Markets covered

Online / electronic (15 markets): the Nordics — Sweden (Nasdaq Stockholm/First North/NGM/Spotlight), Norway, Denmark, Finland; US (NYSE/Nasdaq/AMEX) and Canada (TSX/TSXV); plus major Western Europe via alternative venues — Germany (Xetra), the UK, Switzerland, Italy and Spain (Cboe), and France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Portugal (Equiduct).

Phone desk only (18 markets): Austria, Ireland, Greece, Turkey, the Baltics (Estonia/Latvia/Lithuania), Poland, Czechia, Hungary; Japan, Hong Kong, Singapore, Indonesia, the Philippines, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa — plus 'other countries on request' (unnamed, routed via Virtu/SEB).

Confirmed against Avanza's order-execution policy (June 2026): 15 markets trade electronically; 18 more only via the manual phone desk (Swedish residents, high commission, ticker-by-ticker). The policy names those — anything beyond is 'other countries on request,' so deep frontier (LatAm, most of Africa, Central/South Asia) is not a published, guaranteed route.

Client focus
Swedish retail / resident investors
Recommendation
Excellent for Swedish residents (ISK/KF + broker-desk phone orders) — not a route if you're outside the Swedish BankID ecosystem

Verified · 23 June 2026 — I hold an Avanza account, and the online-vs-phone split below is now confirmed against Avanza’s order-execution policy (its country-by-country channel table, Elektroniskt vs Telefon). Individual phone-desk markets are documented in that policy, not all personally tested.

What it is

Avanza is Sweden’s leading retail broker. For ordinary Swedish investors the draw is local convenience: ISK and kapitalförsäkring tax wrappers, Swedish tax reporting, Swedish-language support, and low-friction Swedish/Nordic/US/European trading. For this directory it’s interesting for a different reason — its broker desk can place phone/manual orders in many markets that aren’t ordinary in-app retail markets, which makes it a handy call-first test route for frontier-adjacent names if you’re already an eligible client.

Eligibility: resident, not just citizen

Treat Avanza as Swedish-resident infrastructure, not something any Swedish citizen abroad can automatically use:

The frontier angle: the broker desk

Avanza’s real edge for this registry is its broker desk — the phone-desk markets listed above (the Asia-Pacific names, South Africa, and the smaller European exchanges) aren’t ordinary in-app markets; you reach them by calling, at higher commission. Crucially, Avanza’s order-execution policy (June 2026) names that list, which settles the long-open question of what the desk actually reaches: of the sixteen frontier markets I’d asked about, only South Africa and Turkey are standing desk markets — the rest (Argentina, Peru, Vietnam, Kenya, the BRVM, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Mongolia and the others) fall only under the policy’s catch-all “other countries on request,” so treat deep frontier as maybe, on request, not a confirmed route. And the named list isn’t perfectly current — a June 2026 desk call found Thailand, still on the policy, had actually been dropped years earlier (over Thai foreign-ownership rules), while Czechia was confirmed — so check a specific market with the desk before relying on it.

It’s a call-the-desk route, with the costs that implies: manual orders and high minimums (the catch-all “rest of the world” line is 0.30%, min 749 SEK), you’ll often need the exact local ticker/ISIN/limit, FX runs 0.25% per direction (0.125% with the manual-FX service), and a security being visible on Avanza isn’t the same as being tradeable. Still, for a one-off JSE line, an Indonesian/Philippine name or an OTC ADR, it’s a real option without opening a local account.

Best / poor use cases

Use Avanza when: you’re an eligible Swedish client; you want ISK/KF convenience for routine Swedish/Nordic/US/European investing; or you need a broker-desk route for a specific foreign security and accept manual-order costs.

Skip it when: you can’t maintain Swedish BankID/personnummer/banking; you need cheap high-frequency foreign trading; or you need direct local access to African frontier exchanges (use mystocks.africa or a local broker) or full IBKR-style global breadth.

Verdict

For eligible Swedish residents, Avanza is the natural core broker, and its phone/manual desk is a real edge for one-off foreign orders. The right label is useful-if-eligible: excellent inside the Swedish personnummer/BankID ecosystem, largely irrelevant outside it. Pair it with IBKR for global breadth — and several markets Avanza only reaches via the phone desk at 749 SEK minimum (Greece, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore, LSE/AIM) are ordinary cheap online trades at DEGIRO.
