Researched and verified. I have direct correspondence with Standard Bank / SBG Online Share Trading explicitly declining foreign non-residents, and I opened an EasyEquities account where the same restriction was discovered (foreign non-residents can use the platform for foreign stocks only, not South African stocks). Avanza phone dealing has been confirmed as a working route. This page reflects what actually works versus what generic guides claim works.
Short answer
Foreign individuals can legally own JSE shares — the obstacle is that most retail online brokers will not onboard foreign non-residents, citing FICA, exchange-control, and cross-border service rules. Standard Bank / SBG Online Share Trading explicitly declined me in writing; EasyEquities accepted me but restricted access to foreign stocks only, not JSE. The verified-working direct routes are mystocks.africa (app-based, JSE among 8 African exchanges), Momentum Securities (former Imara S.P. Reid — the broker SBG’s own rejection email recommended for non-residents), and Avanza phone dealing (for existing Avanza customers). No visit to South Africa is required for brokers that accept certified documents remotely. The offshore route is unusually deep: most major South African names trade in London, New York, or via ADRs.
Best practical route
- mystocks.africa — cleanest digital onboarding; passport/national-ID KYC; JSE plus 7 other African markets via one account. See the mystocks.africa broker page for full details.
- Momentum Securities (former Imara S.P. Reid) — SBG’s own referral for non-residents; one of South Africa’s oldest JSE stockbroking licenses; I haven’t opened an account yet, but the SBG signal is meaningful. Contact them directly.
- Avanza phone dealing — if you’re already an Avanza customer, call the broker desk with the JSE ticker and ISIN; orders route via external brokers. Not online, but confirmed working.
- Offshore ADRs / EZA ETF — operationally simplest for the names most foreign investors actually want.
For full-service relationships: Investec Wealth & Investment, Sanlam Private Wealth, PSG Wealth, Nedbank Private Wealth, and Sasfin Wealth may accept foreign non-residents via their private-client arms — each unverified. Bank-affiliated retail platforms (SBG, FNB Share Investing, ABSA Stockbrokers, etc.) are generally not the right entry point.
US residents have two mainstream routes of their own: Fidelity carries the JSE among its 25 online international markets, and the JSE is on the buy-and-sell list of Schwab’s Global Investing Services desk (broker-assisted by phone). IBKR does not carry the JSE for retail — not on the US entity (support-confirmed June 2026), and since US and EU clients share the same stock markets, not on the EU entity either. See the US investors guide.
Broker options
| Broker | Status for foreign non-residents |
|---|---|
| mystocks.africa | Verified working — JSE among 8 African exchanges; digital onboarding |
| Momentum Securities (Imara S.P. Reid) | Researched — explicitly referred by SBG for non-resident accounts |
| Avanza phone dealing | Verified working — confirmed route for existing Avanza customers |
| Standard Bank / SBG Online Share Trading | Explicitly declines — written rejection (April 2026) |
| EasyEquities | Accepts foreign nationals but restricts to foreign stocks only — no JSE |
| IBKR (JSE) | Not a retail route — the JSE is in IBKR’s exchange list but not on the US entity (support-confirmed) nor, by inference, the EU entity (US/EU share the same stock markets); likely IBKR South Africa / institutional only |
| Charles Schwab (US residents) | JSE on the Global Investing Services desk’s buy-and-sell list — broker-assisted by phone; Fidelity also carries the JSE online for US residents |
| EXANTE | Confirmed — the Johannesburg Stock Exchange (JSE) is on its platform equity-exchange list; high (EUR 10,000) minimum |
| Investec Wealth & Investment | Possible via private-client arm — confirm per case |
| PSG Wealth Stockbroking | Notes different banking details for non-SA-resident clients — non-resident onboarding unverified |
| Sharenet Securities | Mentions non-SA/non-resident documentation requirements — non-resident onboarding unverified |
| Sygnia Securities | Now offers private-investor JSE trading — non-resident eligibility unverified |
| Nedbank Private Wealth | Private banking arm may be more flexible than retail platform — confirm |
| Anchor Securities / Sasfin Wealth | Independent/bank-affiliated — confirm per case |
Warnings
- Standard Bank / SBG Online Share Trading explicitly does not serve foreign non-residents (direct written confirmation, April 2026). Disregard generic guides that list SBG as a recommended option.
- EasyEquities onboards foreign nationals but the account is scoped to international (mostly US-listed) securities only — you will not be able to buy JSE-listed stocks. This restriction is not surfaced in EasyEquities marketing or in most generic guides. You discover it only when trying to buy a JSE stock after onboarding.
- IBKR direct JSE access is not reliably confirmed for retail foreign clients — verify before assuming.
What you can actually buy
Via mystocks.africa, Avanza phone, or Momentum Securities-style brokers, the full JSE is accessible:
- Resources: Anglo American (also LSE: AAL), Anglo American Platinum, Sibanye Stillwater (also NYSE: SBSW), Gold Fields (also NYSE: GFI), Harmony Gold (also NYSE: HMY), Sasol (also NYSE: SSL), Impala Platinum, AngloGold Ashanti
- Banks: Standard Bank (SBK), FirstRand (FSR), Nedbank (NED), ABSA (ABG), Capitec (CPI), Investec (INL)
- Telecoms: MTN Group (MTN) — pan-African
- Retail: Shoprite (SHP), Woolworths (WHL), Pick n Pay (PIK), Mr Price (MRP)
- Tech / media: Naspers (NPN, also Amsterdam), Prosus (PRX, primarily Amsterdam)
- REITs: Growthpoint Properties (GRT), Redefine Properties (RDF)
- Industrials: AECI, BHP Group (also LSE/ASX primary), Bidvest (BVT)
- Plus 300+ additional JSE listings across consumer, financials, mid-caps
Tax, documentation & residency friction
No visit to South Africa is required if your broker accepts certified documents remotely — the friction is FICA/KYC certification and exchange-control account tagging, not in-person presence. (A visit may be needed if you try to open a full South African non-resident bank account, which is separate from a brokerage/custody account.)
Documentation typically required: passport, proof of address, tax residence / FATCA-CRS declarations, bank details, source-of-funds information. Your broker/CSDP opens a securities account marked as non-resident for exchange-control purposes — this designation is what makes later repatriation clean. South African residents cannot act as nominees for non-residents without approval.
Offshore-listed alternatives
South Africa has one of the deepest offshore-access universes among emerging markets:
- EZA (NYSE Arca) — iShares MSCI South Africa ETF; broad JSE equity beta; clean diversified-exposure route
- GFI (NYSE) — Gold Fields; JSE-primary; US ADR
- SBSW (NYSE) — Sibanye-Stillwater; JSE-primary; US ADR
- HMY (NYSE) — Harmony Gold; JSE-primary; US ADR
- SSL (NYSE) — Sasol; JSE-primary; US ADR
- AAL (LSE) — Anglo American; London-primary; significant but not majority SA operations
- AU (NYSE) — AngloGold Ashanti; SA-origin gold but now UK-domiciled and globally diversified — little SA production left
- PRX (Euronext Amsterdam) — Prosus; Naspers heritage; assets are global tech (mainly Tencent) — limited actual SA operations
- MTN Group, Shoprite Holdings — JSE-primary; no liquid offshore listing but accessible via the working broker routes above
For diversified EM positioning, the offshore route is genuinely sufficient — most major South African corporate franchises (mining, telecoms, retail, tech/Naspers) are accessible without JSE-specific broker setup.
Verdict
South Africa is the directory’s clearest example of the “many brokers listed, narrow subset actually works” pattern. The Standard Bank rejection email and the EasyEquities limitation are both lived discoveries that materially correct generic frontier-markets coverage. The good news: the offshore route is deep, and for investors wanting direct JSE single-name access, mystocks.africa and Momentum Securities are realistic paths without requiring a trip to Johannesburg.
