Status: Researched · 10 June 2026, with a reader-reported confirmation for JSE (see below).
What it is
Saxo Bank is a cross-border global broker — an IBKR / Swissquote peer: bank-style custody, multi-currency trading, and a deep multi-asset platform. But its market reach is narrower than the marketing suggests — it’s a developed-markets broker plus a few larger emerging/secondary venues, not a frontier-exchange route.
Eligibility (check this first)
Saxo services existing clients from a published country list (much of Europe, plus Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, Malaysia, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, UAE, the UK). The serviced-country list differs from where it onboards new clients — the operational test is the residence selector in the account-opening form. As of the 29 May 2026 support page, the serviced list does not include the US, Canada or South Africa as client residences (even where Saxo provides those markets to clients elsewhere).
Reader report (June 2026): Ralf P. Luig confirms Johannesburg / JSE access via the Zurich branch (Saxo Bank Switzerland). So JSE is reachable on at least one entity — but the fact that it surfaces through a specific branch suggests access is entity-dependent, which fits the otherwise fragmented picture. Confirm against your own residence/entity rather than assuming it carries across all of Saxo.
Market access, checked
The exchange evidence is fragmented; the defensible read is developed markets + selected larger EM/secondary venues:
- North America — NYSE, Nasdaq, NYSE MKT, OTC/Pink Sheets, Toronto (TSX/TSXV)
- Europe — LSE/IOB, Xetra, Euronext (Paris/Amsterdam/Brussels/Lisbon), Milan, Madrid, Oslo, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Helsinki, Switzerland, Vienna, Prague, Warsaw, Athens, Luxembourg
- Asia-Pacific — ASX, Hong Kong, Singapore, Tokyo, Malaysia, China (Shanghai/Shenzhen Stock Connect)
What it is not: a broad route to local frontier exchanges. No solid evidence of direct access to Morocco, Egypt, Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, BRVM, Vietnam, Mongolia, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Colombia, Chile or Argentina. JSE is the resolved-but-nuanced case — it shows in one Saxo Belgium support list, an operator check once suggested it might not be tradeable, but a reader has now confirmed it live via the Zurich branch (see above), so it’s real on at least one entity and likely account/entity-dependent elsewhere. Greek cash equities reportedly need a special (SAT) account, and Turkey isn’t evidenced.
Phone / manual orders
Saxo does take manual orders by phone/chat/email (≈EUR 50 fee), but this is for supported or non-online instruments — not a Swissquote-style “any market by phone” desk. Don’t treat it as a way to reach exchanges outside Saxo’s supported universe.
Best / poor use cases
Use Saxo when: you want a serious non-IBKR global broker for developed markets and the AIM/IOB/ASX/TSX-V/HKEX/SGX/Tokyo lines of frontier/EM operators, and your residence is supported.
Skip it when: you need direct frontier local exchanges, a broad phone desk, or certainty a given JSE/Greek/Turkish ticker is tradeable.
Verdict
A credible cross-border broker to complement IBKR/Swissquote — but for developed markets + a few larger EM/secondary venues, not frontier exchanges. Confirm residence/entity and live exchange/ticker availability before relying on it; JSE is reader-confirmed on the Zurich entity but appears entity-dependent, so verify it on yours.
