Croatia

Researched· 2026-06-08

I have not opened a Croatian broker account. Based on Zagreb Stock Exchange member list, Croatian bank/broker materials, HANFA/SKDD materials, and ETF data.

Short answer

Croatia is investable but local-broker dependent: direct single-name access to the Zagreb Stock Exchange (ZSE) generally means using a Croatian broker or bank-broker, not a mainstream global broker. Croatia is in the EU and eurozone (EUR), so there’s no currency-control friction — the gating items are typically a Croatian OIB (tax number) and, often, a Croatian bank account; confirm both with the broker. If you just want broad exposure, an ETF wrapper (the Expat Croatia CROBEX ETF on Xetra, or InterCapital’s CROBEX10tr ETF on the ZSE) is the easiest route. There’s no clean single-name Croatian company listed on a major Western exchange — Hrvatski Telekom’s old London GDR is long gone.

Best practical route

  • Broad exposure, no local account: the Expat Croatia CROBEX UCITS ETF (Xetra: ECDC) through any broker that carries it — but it’s a tiny fund, so check liquidity/spreads.
  • Single ZSE names: open with a Croatian broker — InterCapital Securities (the leading regional independent) is the first to ask about non-resident onboarding; the bank-brokers (Zagrebačka banka, PBZ, Erste, RBA, OTP) are the alternative if you already bank in Croatia.

Broker options

The ZSE is accessed through member brokers; most reputable ones are bank-affiliated. I haven’t verified the onboarding details for a non-resident, so treat the specifics below as unconfirmed — check directly with each broker whether they accept non-resident foreigners at all, whether onboarding can be done remotely and in English, and whether an OIB (Croatian tax number) and a Croatian bank account are required.

What you can actually buy

ZSE-listed equities — the core Croatian names:

  • Hrvatski Telekom — telecom (Deutsche Telekom-controlled)
  • Podravka — food & pharma
  • Končar — electrical equipment / energy infrastructure
  • Adris Grupa — tourism, insurance, investment holding
  • Atlantic Grupa — consumer goods
  • Valamar Riviera, Maistra — tourism/hotels
  • Ericsson Nikola Tesla — telecom/software (local Ericsson affiliate)

Tax, documentation & residency friction

  • Currency — EUR (Croatia joined the eurozone in 2023), so no FX-control friction.
  • OIB — Croatia’s tax/ID number is often required to open a securities/CSD account; ask the broker whether they obtain it for you.
  • Croatian bank account — frequently needed for funding/settlement; confirm before applying.
  • Custody — holdings register through SKDD (the central depository); ask whether in your own name or via nominee.

Expat Croatia CROBEX UCITS ETFECDCXetraTracks the CROBEX index; broad Croatia exposure without a Croatian account — but a very small fund

There’s no clean single-name Croatian company on a major foreign exchange: Hrvatski Telekom’s former London GDR was discontinued, and foreign groups with Croatian tourism/hotel assets (e.g. PPHE/Arena-type names) aren’t majority-Croatia, so they’re not listed here as proxies. For single names, the local ZSE route is the real one.

Verdict

Croatia is a small but real market — telecom, tourism, food, industrials and consumer goods — and being in the eurozone removes the currency headaches that plague many frontier markets. The catch is access: it’s broker-led and local, so for single names you’ll want InterCapital or a Croatian bank-broker, while the CROBEX ETFs cover the broad case (mind the thin liquidity).
