I have not opened a Bulgarian broker account. Based on Bulgarian broker materials, BSE/Central Depository references, and ETF data.
Short answer
Bulgaria is accessible but thin. Direct single-name access to the Bulgarian Stock Exchange (BSE) normally means a Bulgarian investment intermediary — global brokers don’t reliably offer direct BSE cash equities. The unusually convenient part is the ETF wrapper: the Expat Bulgaria SOFIX UCITS ETF (BGX) trades in London and on Xetra, so broad SOFIX exposure needs no Bulgarian account. The lev (BGN) sits under a euro currency board with euro adoption in progress, so there’s little FX friction. Net: ETF first, local broker second unless you have a specific Bulgarian company in mind.
Best practical route
- Broad exposure, no local account: the Expat Bulgaria SOFIX ETF (LSE/Xetra: BGX) through any broker that carries it — mind the small fund size.
- Single BSE names: open with a Bulgarian intermediary — ELANA Trading or Karoll Brokerage are the first to ask about non-resident onboarding.
Broker options
The BSE is accessed through licensed investment intermediaries. Confirm non-resident onboarding, remote/English setup, and whether a Bulgarian bank account is required.
| Broker | Notes |
|---|---|
| ELANA Trading | Established 1991; BSE via ELANA BG Trader, plus international access (references 120+ markets via Auerbach Grayson) |
| Karoll Brokerage | Licensed intermediary; partners with Interactive Brokers / CMC for international markets |
| Capman | BSE + Central Depository member |
| Sofia International Securities | BSE member; more institutional/deal-oriented |
| MK Brokers | BSE brokerage; MiFID II passporting across the EU |
| Municipal Bank | Bank-broker; BSE + Central Depository member |
What you can actually buy
SOFIX-index and other BSE names — the local universe:
- Sopharma — pharmaceuticals
- Shelly Group (formerly Allterco) — smart-home/IoT, global sales (also Frankfurt-listed)
- Chimimport — diversified holding
- Monbat — batteries
- Eurohold — insurance/energy holding
- Advance Terrafund REIT, First Investment Bank (Fibank), plus smaller industrials and REITs
Tax, documentation & residency friction
- Currency — the lev (BGN) under a euro currency board; euro adoption in progress, so minimal FX/control friction.
- Custody — holdings register through Central Depository AD; ask whether in your own name or via nominee.
- Local account — a Bulgarian bank account may be required for funding/settlement; confirm with the broker.
Offshore-listed alternatives
| Name | Ticker | Exchange | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shelly Group | SLYG | Xetra | Bulgarian smart-home/IoT company; first Bulgarian company on Xetra (SDAX) — sales are global |
| Expat Bulgaria SOFIX UCITS ETF | BGX | LSE | Broad SOFIX exposure, also on Xetra; small fund — check liquidity |
Shelly Group is the standout single-name: a Bulgarian IoT company that listed in Germany (Xetra) in 2024 and is now in the SDAX — the cleanest way to own a Bulgarian company from abroad (its revenue is international, but it’s genuinely Bulgarian). Beyond Shelly there’s no deep list of Bulgarian ADRs/GDRs; the BSE’s new EuroBridge Xetra segment may bring more dual-listings over time, but for now it’s Shelly plus the SOFIX ETF.
Verdict
Bulgaria is investable but small and illiquid by regional standards. The Expat SOFIX ETF makes broad exposure unusually easy for a market this size, while single names still go through a local broker like ELANA or Karoll. Researched, not yet opened.
