Morocco

Researched· 2026-06-08

I have not opened a Moroccan broker account. Based on AMMC guidance, the Casablanca Stock Exchange international-investor guide, Maroclear, and broker/company materials.

Short answer

Morocco has a real, active market — the Casablanca Stock Exchange (~75–80 listings: banks, telecom, ports, cement, mining, consumer, healthcare) — and no limit on foreign ownership of listed shares. But for a foreign individual, single-name access generally means a Moroccan brokerage / bank-broker; it isn’t a tidy IBKR-style global-broker market. And while Moroccan market documents recognise non-resident foreign individuals, I haven’t found a local broker that clearly advertises fully-remote onboarding for an arbitrary non-resident — so treat direct Casablanca access as possible by market structure, but broker-confirmation-required. The one clean exception is Maroc Telecom, dual-listed on Euronext Paris (IAM) — reachable through any Euronext-capable broker with no Moroccan account. Currency is the dirham (MAD).

Update (July 2026): mystocks.africa added the Casablanca Stock Exchange to its platform — the first remote, aggregator route into CSE single names for a foreign individual (verified in its market selector; the usual startup-aggregator caution applies — it routes through underlying local brokers). That materially softens the “broker-confirmation-required” caveat above for anyone comfortable with the aggregator structure.

Best practical route

  • A single clean foreign listing: Maroc Telecom (Euronext Paris: IAM) — Morocco’s telecom leader, with a big West/Central Africa footprint via Moov Africa.
  • Casablanca single names: open with a Moroccan broker — BMCE Capital Bourse or Attijari Intermediation (Wafa Bourse) first; CDG Capital Bourse, CFG, BMCI Bourse, Sogécapital, Upline as alternatives.
  • Phone-desk test: Mubasher lists Morocco by phone — worth confirming with its desk.

Broker options

The Casablanca exchange is accessed through (mostly bank-affiliated) Moroccan brokers. Confirm non-resident onboarding, English/French remote setup, and funding currency.

What you can actually buy

Casablanca-listed names — and several are Moroccan multinationals using Casablanca as a West/Central Africa hub:

  • Attijariwafa Bank (ATW) — largest Moroccan bank; operations across ~15 African countries (incl. Senegal/CBAO)
  • Bank of Africa / BMCE (BOA) — pan-African network incl. all eight BRVM countries + Ghana
  • Maroc Telecom (IAM) — telecom; Moov Africa subsidiaries across the Sahel/Central Africa
  • Managem (MNG) — mining group with operations across ~8 African countries
  • Banque Centrale Populaire, Marsa Maroc (ports), LafargeHolcim Maroc / Ciments du Maroc, TAQA Morocco, Cosumar, Label’Vie, Akdital (healthcare)

That regional reach is one of the better reasons to look at Morocco — it’s a way to own African-growth franchises through a relatively liquid Casablanca listing.

Tax, documentation & residency friction

  • Foreign ownership — AMMC confirms no limit on foreign ownership of Casablanca-listed companies (subject to takeover/offer thresholds).
  • Currency — the dirham (MAD), a managed currency.
  • Custody — holdings register through Maroclear; ask own-name vs nominee, and how dividends/withholding/repatriation are handled.

There’s no clean, liquid Morocco-only foreign ETF; broad Africa funds (e.g. AFK) carry some Moroccan weight but aren’t focused. For Attijariwafa, Bank of Africa, Managem and the rest, the local Casablanca route is the way in.

Verdict

Morocco is too real to skip: an active exchange, open foreign ownership, and some of the best listed ways to play “Morocco as a West/Central African financial and telecom hub” (Attijariwafa, Bank of Africa, Maroc Telecom, Managem). The catch is that those multinationals are mostly Casablanca-only — Maroc Telecom on Euronext Paris is the clean exception — so for the rest you’ll want a Moroccan broker.
