Uzbekistan

Researched and verified. I have opened accounts with KapDepo and Freedom Finance Uzbekistan and tested withdrawal successfully.

Short answer

Uzbekistan is meaningfully accessible to foreign individual investors as of 2026. The actual trading interface is uniformly bad — Uzbek brokers route their order entry through a centralized national platform called fondbozori.uz that has the user experience of a 1990s mainframe terminal. Some brokers wrap this in their own modern front-end; others (including Freedom Finance Uzbekistan, KapDepo) leave clients dealing with the raw platform.

The fondbozori.uz trading terminal — buy/sell order entry, balances, and candlestick charts

Despite the interface, the market is genuinely accessible — the friction is operational, not structural. Account opening is doable remotely; trading works; I have tested withdrawal successfully. Uzbek brokers generally charge no account-opening or account-maintenance fees, which makes the market unusually retail-friendly.

Broker options for foreign individuals

BrokerForeign individual accessIn-person visit / local requirements
Freedom Finance UzbekistanYes — verified (I tested it)No visit required. Account opening: video of yourself signing documents + documents sent by physical post to Uzbekistan (~4 weeks postal transit). Trading possible in the interim before documents arrive
KapDepo (Kapital Depozit)Yes — verified (I tested it)Requires a video call to sign account opening documents, plus documents sent by physical post. Does not allow trading until physical documents are received. Also uses fondbozori.uz for trading without a modern front-end overlay
Jett (jett.uz)Yes, but with caveatRequires an Uzbek mobile phone number to sign up. Obtaining one online is possible but adds operational friction. I did not pursue this path
Avesta Investment GroupYes (private + institutional)Established Tashkent investment bank; brokerage and custody for foreign investors. More advisory/institutional than app-based retail

Freedom Finance Uzbekistan — verified working broker

Website: https://ffin.uz/en Status: Verified — I opened an account, traded, and successfully tested full withdrawal

Important non-conflation: Freedom Finance Uzbekistan is operationally distinct from Freedom Finance Kazakhstan — even though both are arms of the same group (Freedom Holding Corp, Nasdaq: FRHC). Different regulatory regime, different operational reality. The Kazakhstan/Freedom24 arm has a documented withdrawal failure: see the Freedom24 / Kazakhstan warning and the counterparty-risk guide. I have had a positive experience with the Uzbekistan branch, including a successful full withdrawal of funds. I can’t guarantee similar problems won’t develop here as they have in Kazakhstan, but as of last verification (May 2026) I’ve encountered none.

Onboarding process (my lived experience):

  1. Inquire about opening an account; broker provides documentation requirements
  2. Record a video of yourself signing the account opening documents (regulatory requirement; not a unique-to-Freedom-Finance quirk)
  3. Send physical original documents by post to Uzbekistan — this took approximately 4 weeks of postal transit time for me
  4. Trading is possible in the interim before documents arrive — the broker activates the account on receipt of electronic copies and the postal originals are for compliance file completion

Service quality:

Ultra-attentive. I was assigned a dedicated support contact available on WhatsApp essentially 24/7, who proactively sent research reports and market updates. This level of attention is unusual for a small retail investor — most Western retail brokers offer nothing comparable.

The support contact even apologized in advance for how bad the trading interface was. Genuine self-awareness about the fondbozori.uz problem rather than pretending the platform is acceptable.

Trading workflow:

Login via fondbozori.uz — the centralized national platform that all Uzbek brokers’ clients use for order entry. The interface looks like Sun Microsystems-era enterprise software circa 1993. Functional but archaic.

Some Uzbek brokers wrap their own modern front-end around the fondbozori.uz backend, smoothing the user experience. Freedom Finance Uzbekistan does not. Clients trade directly on the fondbozori platform. If interface aesthetics matter, this is a real downside; if you can tolerate utilitarian interfaces in exchange for excellent human support, the trade-off works.

KapDepo (Kapital Depozit) — verified working broker

Website: https://kapdepo.uz

Requires a video call to sign account opening documents, plus documents sent by physical post — similar to Freedom Finance’s workflow, except KapDepo does not allow trading until physical documents are received. Uses fondbozori.uz for trading without a modern front-end overlay.

A reasonable alternative to Freedom Finance for foreign individuals who prefer to avoid Freedom Finance branding for any reason.

Jett — researched but not opened

Website: https://jett.uz/en/

Made by people who understand tech and user-friendliness. The cleanest-looking Uzbek broker interface by a significant margin. The dealbreaker is the Uzbek mobile number signup requirement — possible to solve via eSIM or correspondent SIM service but adds operational friction that I chose not to pursue.

For a foreign individual prepared to obtain an Uzbek mobile number, Jett may be the best Uzbek broker experience available. The platform is built to modern UX standards; signup process appears streamlined; account management presumably matches the interface quality.

Avesta Investment Group — local investment bank

Website: https://avestagroup.com/en/

Avesta Investment Group is an established Tashkent investment bank (founded 2003) offering securities brokerage and custody to foreign private and institutional investors, alongside corporate finance, asset management, and research. It was named best investment bank in Uzbekistan at the Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2025, and is the Uzbekistan partner of Auerbach Grayson. It leans more advisory/institutional than app-based retail — best suited to investors who want a relationship-driven local broker (with research coverage) rather than a self-directed platform. Researched, not yet opened.

Key process for foreign individuals

  1. Choose a broker — Freedom Finance Uzbekistan or KapDepo for remote onboarding without an Uzbek phone number; Jett if you can obtain an Uzbek mobile number; Avesta for a relationship-driven local broker
  2. Submit documentation — passport copy, proof of address, broker-specific application forms
  3. Video signing — required by Uzbek financial regulations for all foreign-individual onboarding
  4. Post original documents to Uzbekistan — allow ~4 weeks postal transit; Freedom Finance can activate on electronic copies in the meantime, KapDepo waits for the originals
  5. Trade via fondbozori.uz — either directly (Freedom Finance, KapDepo) or through a broker’s modern front-end if available (Jett)

Verdict

Uzbekistan is dramatically more accessible than its reputation suggests. The country is in genuine economic transition — Mirziyoyev-era reforms have opened capital markets, attracted foreign direct investment, and produced real corporate growth. The investment case for Uzbek equities is substantive (commodity exposure, demographic dividend, structural reform tailwind).

The friction is interface and process, not access. Account opening takes weeks (postal transit) but works. Trading interface is bad but functional. The actual mechanics of getting money in, taking positions, and getting money out — I have tested all three and they work.

This is a market worth the friction for investors with a specific Central Asian thesis, particularly if you want exposure beyond the Kazakhstan-dominant Central Asian listings (Halyk, Kaspi). Uzbek listings are smaller, less liquid, less covered by Western analysts, and consequently potentially more attractively priced for patient investors willing to do the work.

What you can actually buy

Tashkent Stock Exchange (UZSE) listed equities, including preferred shares. The most actively traded names tend to be the major Uzbek banks, some industrials, and the recently-IPO’d consumer/tech names. The universe is small but real — perhaps 50–80 listed companies of which 15–20 have meaningful liquidity.

Offshore-listed Uzbekistan exposure

For investors who don’t want to navigate local onboarding plus the fondbozori.uz interface, an offshore-listed Uzbekistan vehicle became available in May 2026:

  • UzNIF — the National Investment Fund of Uzbekistan (LSE GDRs: UZNF) — a state investment fund managed by Franklin Templeton, holding strategic stakes (25–40%) in 13 Uzbek state-owned enterprises. Listed on the London Stock Exchange via GDRs and dual-listed in Tashkent (May 2026); accessible through IBKR or any standard broker covering London. This is the first meaningful offshore-listed Uzbekistan exposure vehicle.

It is a fund, not a single stock — so:

  • Shares can trade at a premium or discount to NAV
  • Liquidity is set by the London secondary market rather than the underlying Uzbek market
  • Exposure is to the fund’s portfolio of state-enterprise stakes rather than direct UZSE single names

For investors wanting diversified Uzbekistan-economic exposure with minimum operational friction, UzNIF is now the cleanest single-line offshore route. For single-name UZSE positions, a local Uzbek broker remains necessary.
