Verified — long-standing IBKR account in active use. The foundation broker for ~60% of this directory’s geographic surface; the FM/EM-specific brokers here are complementary to it, not competitive.
What it is
Interactive Brokers is the default global broker for serious individual and small-institutional international investors. 170+ markets, accessible from 200+ countries of client residence, with a multi-currency account architecture (28 funding currencies) and deep instrument coverage across stocks, options, futures, currencies, bonds, and funds. The right starting question for any reader is: what can I already access through IBKR before opening accounts with niche FM/EM brokers?
EM/FM markets accessible via IBKR:
- MENA: Saudi Arabia — Tadawul (October 9, 2024, via SNB Capital alliance; first international retail broker for Saudi access); UAE — ADX and DFM (December 9, 2025); Israel (TASE)
- LatAm: Mexico (BMV); Brazil B3 (December 11, 2025)
- Eastern Europe: Central Europe (Czechia, Hungary, Poland, Romania, Slovenia) packaged as one trading permission; Baltic States (Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania) as a second permission — single-checkbox access to 8 FM/EM markets via two permission boxes
- Africa: none in practice — the JSE shows in IBKR’s exchange list but isn’t a retail route (not reachable by US or EU clients; likely an IBKR South Africa / institutional line). For the JSE use Fidelity, the Schwab desk, EXANTE or a local SA broker — see the South Africa page
- Asia: Hong Kong, Singapore, Japan, South Korea KRX (May 7, 2026 — first major US-based broker for KRX retail access), Taiwan TWSE (July 19, 2023), Australia, Malaysia Bursa (August 27, 2024)
- India: not available — IBKR India serves Indian residents and NRIs/Persons of Indian Origin only; no IBKR entity gives a non-Indian foreigner NSE/BSE stocks. The only India-linked product for everyone else is GIFT Nifty index futures (launched March 2025). See the India country page for why no broker can fix this
Markets NOT covered — where specialist brokers in this directory are necessary:
- BRVM / francophone West Africa → Daba Finance
- Kenya, Nigeria, Ghana, deeper African markets → mystocks.africa
- Thailand (SET) → Boom Securities (primary-source verified; IBKR does not cover SET)
- Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines → TCBS / Boom Securities / local brokers
- Mongolia, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan → local Central Asian brokers
- Kazakhstan KASE → BCC, Teniz, etc. (Halyk Bank LSE-listed is the IBKR-accessible workaround)
- Pakistan → SCRA route via local custodian
- Argentina → Balanz (IBKR has limited Argentina access)
- Cambodia, Laos → offshore-listed names (Hong Lai Huat SGX, Mega First Bursa)
- UK AIM small-caps (not all) → Trading 212 / Lightyear / UK-domiciled brokers (IBKR covers the LSE main board but not every AIM listing — e.g. Spectra Systems needed Trading 212 to execute)
Who it’s for (and who should skip)
For: any serious international investor as the primary account — best cost structure, widest coverage, multi-currency architecture, no minimum balance (retail accounts; previously $10K, since removed), no inactivity fees (eliminated for retail accounts). Works for Western residents onboarding to EM/FM investing and for EM-resident investors with the right documentation.
Skip if: you specifically need deep-frontier markets (see the “not covered” list above), local-currency exposure to markets without ADR/GDR alternatives, or pre-IPO and small-cap names only listed locally.
Account-opening friction
Standard online application. Documentation requirements vary by country of residence but are uniformly less demanding than any FM/EM-specific broker in this directory. Most Western residents complete onboarding in days. Commission structure (IBKR Lite vs IBKR Pro) is competitive versus any global broker.
Verdict
The interface of IBKR is not great — it’s clunky, hard to find what you’re looking for, and introduces weird load/wait times even for simple tasks. But that’s it on the negatives. IBKR has the best coverage in the world, very low fees (FX conversions are done at market rates, for example), great support, and a super smooth, fast process for deposits and withdrawals. And — unlike almost all other brokers — IBKR lets you be a resident practically anywhere in the world (except the likes of North Korea) and still open an account. Beyond stocks, it supports basically everything else: bonds from all over the world, funds, commodities, options, crypto, prediction markets.
The more you use IBKR — getting used to the interface and discovering more of what it offers — the better it gets. I really appreciate their nerdy completeness in the offer: when they say they cover Poland, for example, they don’t just mean the Main Market (Rynek Główny) — unlike other brokers, they also support the secondary NewConnect market, where all the interesting microcaps are.
Overall, despite the interface, I think this is probably the best broker in the world.
