Egypt

Researched· 2026-05-23

I have not opened an Egyptian broker account. Content based on MCDR brokerage member listings, EGX foreign investor materials, and broker websites including EFG Hermes, Mubasher Trade, Naeem, Synergy, Prime, and others.

Short answer

Foreign non-resident individuals can access Egypt’s stock market through any FRA-licensed broker on the Egyptian Exchange (EGX). The architecture is simpler than India or Bangladesh — one broker relationship, no separate custodian coordination at the retail level. The broker obtains your MCDR investor code (Misr for Central Clearing, Depository and Registry) on your behalf; you never touch MCDR directly. An in-person visit is usually not required with brokers experienced in foreign clients, but expect KYC documentation by courier or certified upload. The main structural friction is Egypt’s currency trajectory, not the broker mechanics.

Best practical route

  1. mystocks.africa — the easiest fully-remote route: an online African-exchange aggregator that includes the EGX, with stablecoin funding and no Egyptian account. (It’s an aggregator, so layered counterparty risk applies.)
  2. EFG Hermes, via its retail app EFG Hermes One — Egypt’s dominant broker; foreign individuals can open it (passport + a second ID) with no minimum deposit. The natural default for a direct EGX account.
  3. Local FRA-licensed brokers — CI Capital, Beltone, Naeem, HC Securities, Al Ahly Pharos — for relationship/advisory service or specific names.
  4. Mubasher Trade Egypt — online onboarding (passport referenced for non-residents), but currently unverified (its production site was down) — confirm the live entity first.

Broker options

International / online brokers (reach the EGX without an Egyptian relationship):

BrokerNotes
mystocks.africaEGX is among its 12 African exchanges; online onboarding, stablecoin funding, no Egyptian account. Aggregator — layered counterparty risk
EFG Hermes (EFG Hermes One)EFG’s retail app — Egypt (and UAE); foreign individuals can open it (passport + a second ID), no minimum deposit. The dominant Egyptian broker
Mubasher / Mubasher Trade EgyptOnline trading; passport referenced for non-residents — but ⚠ unverified (production site down), confirm the live entity before relying on it

IBKR and EXANTE do not offer the Egyptian Exchange — there’s no mainstream global-broker route to the EGX; use the online routes above or a local broker.

What you can actually buy

EGX-listed equities — 200+ companies including Commercial International Bank (CIB), Telecom Egypt, ElSewedy Electric, Edita Food Industries, Eastern Company (tobacco), Talaat Moustafa Group (real estate), Madinet Nasr Housing, Fawry (fintech), and names across pharmaceuticals, tourism, consumer, and agriculture.

Egyptian government bonds and treasury bills — accessible through brokers offering fixed-income services. Egyptian T-bills have historically offered high nominal yields but carry significant currency risk.

EGP- or USD-denominated mutual funds — available through brokers offering fund distribution.

Offshore — no Egyptian account needed: Egypt’s largest private bank, Commercial International Bank (CIB), trades as a London GDR (LSE: CBKD) — one GDR per EGX ordinary share (COMI) — so you can hold the EGX’s marquee blue-chip through any broker that reaches London, without EGX/MCDR onboarding. It’s the main Egyptian name with a clean London line.

Tax, documentation & residency friction

No regulatory minimum investment identified. Typical costs: broker commission 0.15%–0.40%, EGX exchange fees, MCDR depository fees, Egyptian stamp duty. Private/foreign-client desks at EFG Hermes and HC Securities may impose practical relationship thresholds.

Standard KYC package for foreign non-residents:

  • Certified/notarized passport copy
  • Proof of address (utility bill, bank statement)
  • Tax residency declaration and TIN
  • FATCA/CRS forms
  • Source-of-funds documentation
  • Wet-signed account agreement (may require courier)

Funding settles in EGP; some brokers and custodians accept USD/EUR and convert. Egypt has experienced multiple significant currency devaluations, including dramatic IMF-program-driven adjustments in 2024 — USD-equivalent returns are materially affected by FX moves.

Verdict

Egypt is meaningfully accessible — one of the more practical MENA markets for foreign individuals once you choose the right broker. The account architecture (single broker, MCDR code handled for you) is cleaner than South/Southeast Asian custodian routes. Onboarding can typically be completed remotely in 2–4 weeks with a broker that has a foreign-client desk. The real risk is currency: multiple devaluations over the past decade mean that nominal EGP gains can vanish in USD terms. Investors with a specific Egypt or MENA thesis will find the broker mechanics solvable; the macro/FX question is where the work is.
