Oman

Researched· 2026-06-08

I have not opened an Omani broker account. Based on Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX) / MCD materials, local broker pages and GCC-broker materials.

Short answer

Oman is, for a foreign individual, a local-broker market. Foreign ownership of Omani shares is relatively open (some strategic-sector limits), and the rial (OMR) is pegged to the US dollar — but no major international broker offers direct access to the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX). IBKR doesn’t route to the MSX, and it isn’t on EXANTE’s list either. So buying Omani single names means opening with a licensed Omani broker and getting an MCD investor number (Muscat Clearing & Depository). The offshore alternatives are thin: Bank Muscat has had an international GDR line, Mubasher lists the MSX (but is unverified), and EFG Hermes One’s FAQ names Oman — but when asked directly (June 2026), EFG’s own contact center listed retail accounts for Egypt, Saudi, UAE and global without mentioning Oman, so treat that FAQ line as an uncorroborated marketing claim for now. There is no single-country Oman ETF.

Best practical route

  • Direct MSX names: open with a licensed Omani broker — Ubhar Capital, Gulf Baader Capital Markets, Bank Muscat Brokerage or Oman Arab Bank’s brokerage — and register for an MCD investor number. Confirm non-resident onboarding, remote/English setup and whether an Omani bank account is required.
  • International, online: Mubasher lists the Muscat market in its Gulf DMA set — but it’s currently unverified (its production site was down; confirm the live entity first). IBKR / EXANTE do not reach the MSX.
  • Offshore single name: Bank Muscat has issued GDRs — the main international line into an Omani name — but verify the GDR is still active and liquid before relying on it.
  • Retail, claimed but uncorroborated: EFG Hermes One’s FAQ names Oman, but EFG’s contact center, asked directly (June 2026), listed retail accounts only for Egypt, Saudi, UAE and global — no Oman. Treat the FAQ line as marketing until someone confirms an actual retail MSX account. Its deeper MENA franchise remains institutional.

Direct local-market access

Trades on the MSX go through a CMA-licensed Omani broker, and every investor needs an MCD (Muscat Clearing & Depository) investor number — a one-time registration. Foreigners may invest in most Omani companies without heavy restrictions (a few strategic sectors aside). The practical questions for a non-resident are the usual ones: will the broker onboard a non-resident foreigner, can it be done remotely/in English, and is an Omani bank account required for funding and dividends? Confirm directly.

Brokers to ask: Ubhar Capital, Gulf Baader Capital Markets, Bank Muscat Brokerage, Oman Arab Bank (brokerage arm).

What you can actually buy

The MSX is dominated by banks, telecom, energy/utilities and industrials: Bank Muscat, Sohar International, OQ Exploration & Production (OQEP) (the 2024 state energy IPO), OQ Gas Networks, Oman Telecommunications (Omantel), Ooredoo Oman, Oman Cables, plus REITs and smaller industrials.

Offshore-listed alternatives

There’s no clean offshore route into Oman, which is why it’s mostly a local-broker market:

  • Bank Muscat GDR — the one notable international line into an Omani name; confirm it’s still active and liquid.
  • No single-country Oman ETF — Oman appears only at tiny weightings in some broad GCC/frontier funds, which aren’t a focused way in.
  • Global oil majors with large Omani operations (e.g. Occidental Petroleum, TotalEnergies, Shell) are not listed here — Oman is a small part of each, so they’re not a play on Oman.

Verdict

Oman is genuinely accessible for residents but awkward for a foreign non-resident: the only solid route is a local Omani broker plus an MCD number, since IBKR and EXANTE don’t reach the MSX and there’s no Oman ETF or deep offshore-listing set. Bank Muscat’s GDR and Mubasher’s (unverified) Gulf desk are the partial workarounds. The OMR’s dollar peg removes currency-blowout risk, but access friction is the real story here. Researched, not yet opened.
